Prototype

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, known today as a tourist attraction, was opened in the 1880s. With a length of more than 70 km / 43 miles, it winds along the Animas River and connects the town of Durango with the mining town of Silverton. In the past, the line was used to haul gold and silver ore from the mines of the San Juan area. Today it is used exclusively for tourist passenger service. In addition to the K-36 and K-37 steam locomotives, the line also uses type DL 535 diesel locomotives that came from the White Pass & Yukon and were built by Alco, with a 1,200 horsepower engine.
