Prototype The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, known today as a tourist attraction, was opened in the 1880s. With a length of more than 70 km / 43 miles, it winds along the Animas River and connects the town of Durango with the mining town of Silverton. In the past, the line was used to haul gold and silver ore from the mines of the San Juan area. Today it is used exclusively for tourist passenger service. In addition to the K-36 and K-37 steam locomotives, the line also uses type DL 535 diesel locomotives that came from the White Pass & Yukon and were built by Alco, with a 1,200 horsepower engine. Starting in 1962, German manufacturer Deutz offered the two-axle diesel-hydraulic KG 230 B in the Köf III power class. KG stands for small locomotive with cardan shaft drive, 230 for the power in hp, and B for the wheel arrangement. The in-house air-cooled twelve-cylinder A12L714 engine produced 230 hp at 2000 rpm. The seven KG 230s built for explosion-sensitive factories were equipped with a water-cooled six-cylinder diesel engine. The transmissions of most locomotives were set to a top speed of between 20 and 30 km/h for the sake of tractive power. Depending on the track layout, customers had additional metal installed in the frame area, allowing the locomotives to be ordered with a weight of 26 to 36 tons. The two locomotives of Bayernhafen AG, the BEHALA locomotives, even had multi-control systems. Despite their advanced age, many of the two-axle locomotives still in use today still have their original engines. Since most companies owned only a few traction units, they were kept in good technical condition, as they could not be spared. The list of owners reads like a who's who of major European industries: BP, VTG, Thyssen-Krupp, Mannesmann, Feldmühle AG, Rheinpreußen, to name just a few. The well-known private railway HVLE even painted its KG 275 in its well-known company colors. Port logistics, for example, at Luxport in Luxembourg town Wasserbillig, also relied on the stability and tractive power of the air-cooled two-axle locomotives. The high quality of the construction is demonstrated by the fact that the locomotives are not scrapped but resold when there is no longer any demand.
Prototype More than 300 units of the L45H type were built at the 23 August Locomotive Factory in Bucharest, Romania. The L45H was delivered mainly to Poland, Romania and Hungary. The former GDR had not ordered any units of this type. However, after reunification in 1990, various units of this type came to Germany, including the L45H-083. The buyer was BVO Bahn GmbH (Upper and Western Ore Mountains Bus Transport), which at that time operated the Fichtelberg Railway between Cranzahl and Oberwiesenthal. There it first received a blue paint scheme with a yellow decorative stripe and was available for service starting in 2001. Today the Fichtelberg Railway is operated by Sächsische Dampfeisenbahngesellschaft mbH (SDG). Model Model of the L45H-083 in the Era V version of BVO Bahn GmbH in a blue paint scheme. 50 Years Ago: Farewell to the Class 01 on the Federal Railroad They were a legend and the queens of the German rails: the mighty Pacific express locomotives of the Class 01, which from 1928 on shaped premium express train service in Germany. 50 years ago these stars of the rails finally had to leave the stage on the DB. Before that, however, they still made grand appearances – in the steam locomotive stronghold of Hof. There, at the end, they pulled express, fast and passenger trains, sometimes double-headed, to Regensburg, via Kulmbach to Lichtenfels and, as a special highlight, over the famous Schiefe Ebene, a 25 per mille grade near Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg. In 1972 Hof was still using 14 proud 01s, including the always superbly maintained 01 111. Steam fans from all over the world made pilgrimages to Franconia to experience the last great 01 gala up close. In the fall of 1974 the Class 01 chapter on the Federal Railroad finally came to an end. 01 111, which had kept its old design boiler and front skirting, was spared the scrapyard. Today it stands at the foot of the Schiefe Ebene in the German Steam Locomotive Museum Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg and recalls a glorious chapter of German locomotive history.
