Analogue, DCC, mfx: which to choose?
The question that heats up forums and blocks beginners. Short answer: it depends on your track — and on what you really want to drive.
The three worlds
| Analogue | The transformer sets the voltage; every train on the circuit responds together. Simple, robust, perfect for starting out or running the old collection. |
| DCC | The international digital standard (two-rail). Each locomotive has its address: independent speed, lights and sound, several trains on the same track. |
| mfx | Märklin/Trix digital (mostly three-rail). The locomotive announces itself to the Central Station — zero configuration. |
The rule that simplifies everything
- Märklin track (3-rail AC) → Märklin controller, mfx or DCC-AC locomotives. The world of the pickup shoe.
- Two-rail DC track (Trix, Roco, Fleischmann, Piko…) → DCC, whatever the controller (Z21, multiMaus, CS…).
- An analogue locomotive can almost always be digitalised — it is a decoder fitting, not a bereavement.
Our counter advice
- Beginner with children: a digital starter set — everything factory-matched.
- Old collection: stay analogue, or digitalise machine by machine at the workshop.
- Sound: spectacular — but choose it for the flagship machines, not everywhere.
