The Northlander – a Märklin Legend
Crocodile, Adler or "Stork Legs" – models that are inseparably linked to the Märklin brand. And there is one train that has achieved a similar aura in the Märklin world: the Northlander. The full-size prototype was built in 1957 as a first class TEE in Europe and ran from Toronto, Canada into the far north starting in 1978. That same year, Märklin presented a limited edition special model that later achieved sensational collector prices. In 1998, five Northlander cars returned to Europe. Märklin supported this spectacular undertaking and permanently placed the train in the gallery of the most distinctive Märklin prototypes. The new, finely detailed Insider model continues this incredible European-Canadian story in perfect fashion.
Prototype
Northlander diesel powered rail car train of the Ontario Northland Railway (ONR), Canada (former RAm TEE diesel powered rail car train). 4-part train in a basic sky blue/yellow paint scheme. 1 powered car, 1 compartment car, 1 dining car, 1 open seating car with a cab. Diesel powered rail car train number 1981. The train looks as it did in the 1980s.
Model
4-part unit. With an mfx+ digital decoder and extensive sound and light functions. Regulated high-performance motor with a flywheel in the powered car, centrally mounted. 2 of 3 driving wheel sets in each of the two 3-axle trucks powered via cardan shafts. Traction tires. Factory-installed interior lighting in the compartment, dining and open seating cars. Triple headlights and 2 red marker lights that change over with the direction of travel, as well as the interior lighting, will work in conventional operation and can be controlled digitally. Interior lighting in the baggage compartment of the powered car can be controlled separately digitally. Engine room lighting in the powered car and cab lighting in the powered car and in the cab of the open seating car can each be controlled separately digitally. Classification lights on the ends of the train can be controlled digitally. Maintenance-free warm white and differently colored LEDs are used for the lighting. Special multi-conductor current-conducting couplers with a close coupler guide mechanism between the units for a continuous electrical connection throughout the whole train. Pickup shoe changeover with the power supply dependent on the direction of travel through the leading powered car or open seating car with a cab. Many applied details. Replica Scharfenberg couplers at both ends (non-working). Minimum radius for operation 437.5 mm. Running on radius 1 is also possible if the clearance profile is disregarded. Total length of the train over the couplers approx. 113 cm.
